Apocalyptic Literature
Wild, dark times are rumbling toward us, and the prophet who wishes to write a new apocalypse will have to invent entirely new beasts, and beasts so terrible that the ancient animal symbols of Saint John will seem like cooing doves and cupids in comp
 -Heinrich Heine
When we hear of the world apocalyptic images of fire, destruction, and chaos rings in our ears; yet, that is not the true definition of apocalyptic literature.  The term “apocalyptic” is derived from a Greek word meaning “to uncover, to reveal” (Coogan 430) and literature is derived from a Latin word meaning “letter”.  The concrete definition of apocalyptic literature is “revealing letter” more precisely a prophetic written work, as shown in many books of the Hebrew Bible.
Apocalyptic literature in the Hebrew Bibles is different from those views of the Christian Bible.  In oracles of Amos, Hosea, First Isaiah, and Jeremiah, a concentration of imminent punishment and occasionally forgiveness by Yahweh is found that can be considered as apocalyptic literature.  However, they do not contain any literary element of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse as the book of Revelation does in the New Testament.
Apocalyptic books are “used in earlier prophets to describe divine judgment on Israel and Judah in the near term because of their failure to observe divine commands”  (Coogan 432).  They are similar to stories we tell to correct misbehaving behavior, such as the Santa Claus giving lumps of coal to bad children.  Although some readers “often attempt to read [them] literally….” (Coogan 432).  This is a widely misinterpreted phenomenon. The true end is when we, the human race, consume all the resources, sucking the environment dry, barren, and dead.

The Differences in Daniel

Chapters 1-6 of Daniel Differ from Chapters 7-12
The book of Daniel is constructed as a complete work with changes in point of vision and tone in the middle of the book.
The first half of the book is written in third-person perspective with Daniel becoming an expert in interpreting dreams.  This half is considered a “historical tale of Daniel the protagonist” (Coogan 527).  Chapters 1-4 begin with Daniel’s childhood and his interpretation of king Nebuchadnezzar’s dreams.  These dreams begins with bright tones, “O king, as you looked on there appeared a great statue… which was huge and its brightness surpassing…” (Daniel 2:31) and “I saw a tree of great height in the midst of the earth…Its top reached heaven… Its foliage was beautiful” (Daniel 4:7-9).  Daniel interprets these dreams to the same conclusion; Nebuchadnezzar’s kingdom will be dismantled into four inferior kingdoms.  Things change in Chapter 5 and 6, as Belshazzar, the new king, orders Daniel to interpret a writing of a mysterious human hand, the only time when writing was interpreted in the entire book of Daniel.
Meanwhile, in second half of the book, “[Daniel] himself has dreams and visions and can only interpret them with the assistance of the angel Gabriel” (Coogan 531).  This second half is known as apocalyptic literature as history and predictions of the future are given.  Chapter 7 and 8 contains two of Daniel’s dream.  These dreams are similar to those in chapter 2 and 4; yet different symbols are used to express a darker prophesy, “In my vision at night, I saw the four winds of heaven stirring up the great sea.  Four might beats different from each other emerged from the sea”  (Daniel 7:2-3).  Daniel is unable to understand these visions by himself.  A holy being by the name of Gabriel interprets these dreams for Daniel.  Chapters 10-12 contain a extensively detailed prophecy revealed by an oracle and not by Daniel.

Chapters 1-6 of Daniel Differ from Chapters 7-12
The book of Daniel is broken into 12 chapters and is able to be broken down into many sections

Chapter 1-2 begins with Daniel’s childhood and becoming king Nebuchadnezzar’s dream interpreter.  Chapter 3 stands alone as another story about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego overcoming the furnace, which Nebuchadnezzar sentenced them to.  Chapter 4 is another dream interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar.  Chapter 5 and 6 is about a different king, Belshazzar who orders Daniel to interpret a writing of a mysterious human hand.

Chapter 7 is a 1st person narration of Daniel about a vision he saw from his dreams.  In Chapters 1-6 Daniel was the dream interpreter, yet in chapter 7-12 Daniel is given the interpretation.
Chapter 8 is about another vision of Daniel’s, which he cannot understand.  A holy being by the name of Gabriel interprets this vision for Daniel.  Chapter 9 there is a change in power of the kingdom and Daniel prays to God for the sin of his people.  A man named Gabriel, the same man from his pervious vision came upon Daniel and spoke of a prophecy about the future.
Chapter 10-12 a being appears to Daniel and announces a prophecy of the end of the kingdom’s days.

Life has been great
this weekend is amazing!
I watched Titus Andronicus on friday night
HAD SOME AMAZING VEGAN FOOD
from two new compadres

YESTERDAY I woke up and biked to my friends house
And we rode together to the distant
swap-meet
We mead up with others,
friends, and searched the entire blocks
to find a treasure painted in blue and silver
wow what a beauty
hidden by rust and the unwanted
booty, it was a bike
in all its worthy
crowned to be ours
by a test-ride and a bargain.

After our find, we spitted in our different ways.
Me and Yessica rode down Amar to catch the local bus
and rode back home from our spontaneous adventure.
Godt back home, ate, and became
study partners,
we hit the books
on chapter 9
for two hours.
AND AFTER
we CARPOOLED TO IRVINE
STUDENT LIFE CENTER
AND WATCHED
FORKS OVER KNIFES
TOGETHER WITH OTHERS,
like minds underneath the trees of time.

Well, thats about our day's adventure
we chit chated after
for about an hour
and left back home
to refuel
and being

Literature 010
Cinco De Mayo Thursday
7:59 P.M.  We rush inside, into the dark, to find our seats, as the lights begin to fade in.  Music sets loose from the piano man in the corner of the stage.  Lights gleam on and light the stage like a Mortal Kombat platform.  And so the play beings, with an brief introduction of all the kins, actors: Bruce Turk as Antipholus’, Jerry Kernion as Dromio, Abby Craden as Adriana, Annie Abrams as Luciana, Michael Stone Forrest as Egeon, and others.  This interludic introduction along with the ragtime musical score creates a window, to implore the era of 1884, way back then, when Vaudeville be the bee’s knees in entertainment’s history, setting off a comedic theme, right off the bat, at the drop of a hat.  Not only does this Vaudeville frame add an interesting layer to the already interesting Shakespearian comedic play Director Michael Michetti also brings out a few extra tricks up his sleeve.
An interesting performance choice is made during the telling of the Egeon’s story.  Director Michael Michetti chooses to use a film to accompany the telling of the tragic tale.  This choice of performance gave a very informative and humorous sense for the melancholy anecdote that prolonged his death sentence.  The movie clip also helps decipher the archaic and poetic language of Shakespeare that may not be familiar to audiences of today.  This film clip is shot in black and white, to retain the time frame the director wanted to capture, that of the past, before color, from the years 1880 to 1930, when Vaudeville was all the rage in theatre cities.  This film is one of the many effective performance choices made in the Noise Within’s production of The Comedy of Errors.
Another interesting director’s choice that works well in the comedic Vaudeville theme is the implementation of burlesque dancers.  During the early 1880’s to the 1900’s burlesque dancers were a big hit in the entertainment industry.  This choice of characters seals the deal on the Vaudeville feel, by not lines but rather actions and presence.  These dancers star in sideshows during multiple changes scene changes, giving a lucrative impression of “a play within a play” to the production.  This choice of directing pans out quite nicely to the frame the director was portraying.  It gives a whimsical lively feel that makes being in the theatre a ride of its money’s worth.
Within these sideshow performances the very controversial topic is presented.  During one scene change, a dance erupts between three nuns and three burlesque dancers.  This dance number is not only hysterically entertaining; it had a sense of deepness that conveys the idea of good versus evil.   Good being the nuns and evil, the burlesque dancers.  This small snippet of action shows the power a director has, even when working in the confines of a Shakespearian script.  This scene does well in both entertaining the audience with its witty charm as well as walking the tight rope of moral ethics between what is considered permissible.  The director took this one step further at the end of the play.  As all the actors were leaving towards their appropriate exits, the nuns and burlesque dancers mistakenly switch their routes.  The nuns moved towards the burlesque house; meanwhile, the burlesque dancers walked towards the abbey and at the very last moment the characters realize their mistakes and returned to their fitting exits.  This quick quirky qualm leaves an impression on audiences: maybe we are not so different after all.  A direct influence of the director is witnessed, as this is packaged somewhat subliminally into the story.  With this creative scene, I learned the influence a well-educated individual could provide to the theatre world.  This has opened my eyes to the potential possibilities that are possible to all interpretations of text.  Not only has this expanded my view of the dramatist and literary world, but also I am applying this perspective to I do and see, allowing me to interact both directly and passively with the entire world around me.  I see the world now as a marvelous canvas that is eager to be shaped, molded, and painted into a creation that I feel is most natural to be.  And I believe that is what Michael Michetti intended for his audience to see as well.  With applications of framing, layering, and impressive directions of characters and a lively sense of the Vaudeville era is created; however, there were a few things that could have been better.
The ventriloquism act is an interesting director’s choice that solves the unraveling scene of the play; though, there is one complication with this choice, the volume of the ventriloquist’s voice.  This scene requires both Dromio and Antipholus to meet their twin brothers, thus solving the mishap of mistaken identity.  And the cast does this in a very innovative way by using full-size dummies to play the part of the twin brothers.   Yet, the ventriloquist’s voice was too low during Antipholus’s lines and was not well projected in a theatre full of laughter.  There were points within Antipholus’ speech where words could be neither heard nor understood because of laughter from the audience.  On a positive note, the voice of Dromio’s twin was excellent.  Rene Ruiz, the ventriloquist, was spot in capturing the voice of Jerry Kernion, Dromio.  I was shocked when hearing the puppet Dromio of Syracuse speak, it sounded just like him!  More work could have been put into making the puppets because they were a bit flimsy while on stage.  Making the puppets more solid and sturdy could have been easily done, along with a different system of mechanics to move the arms of the Dromio and Antipholus action figures.  Yet, I understand it is not entirely necessary for the director’s comic vision of the play and this is clearly shown during the last scene.  I would have made the puppets better.
The experience of watching a live Shakespearian play has enriched my understanding of Shakespearian language and drama.  As Jerry Kernion, said after the show, “Shakespeare is meant to be seen not read.”  And after seeing this live performance, reading a script is an entirely different experience.  I now am more in tune with the multiple story lines and open performance choices.  These open actions expand in my mind as I incorporate them in different and creative ways.  I am able to appreciate new interpretations of performance choices and further construct my aesthetics.
In conjunction, this project has taught me the power of teamwork.  As Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world.  Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”  And this play is exactly proves her point.  Although, the cast and crew did not change the world, they however did change my view and potentially many others’s view of the Shakespearian play The Comedy of Errors.  Thank you.

Summer Planning,

When man invented the bicycle he reached the peak of his attainments.  Here was a machine of precision and balance for the convenience of man.  And (unlike subsequent inventions for man's convenience) the more he used it, the fitter his body became.  Here, for once, was a product of man's brain that was entirely beneficial to those who used it, and of no harm or irritation to others.  Progress should have stopped when man invented the bicycle.  ~Elizabeth West, Hovel in the Hills

Things look different from the seat of a bike carrying a sleeping bag with a cold beer tucked inside.  ~Jim Malusa

Think of bicycles as rideable art that can just about save the world.  ~Grant Petersen

All creatures who have ever walked have wished that they might fly.  With highwheelers a flesh and blood man can hitch wings to his feet.  ~Karl Kron, Ten Thousand Miles on a Bicycle

The bicycle is the perfect transducer to match man's metabolic energy to the impedance of locomotion.  Equipped with this tool, man outstrips the efficiency of not only all machines but all other animals as well.  ~Ivan Illich, Energy and Equity, 1974

Life is like riding a bicycle - in order to keep your balance, you must keep moving.  ~Albert Einstein

Metaphor is the concept of understanding one thing in terms of another. A metaphor is a figure of speech that constructs an analogybetween two things or ideas, the analogy is conveyed by the use of a metaphorical word in place of some other word. For example: "Her eyes were glistening jewels." Metaphors compare things without using "like" or "as." (Wikipedia 5/25/11)

You have provided many numerous marvels
and a lot of laughs and giggles

where their mind may wonder
without a care or a sunder
for give them hope and aspire
them to be happy and never ponder
the negativities of self-calamities
for no one can be hard on themselves
just as You are not hard with yourself.
in the book of Job, thats what I learned.
that you have humbly and miraculously
shown us the world your humanity.
Thank you Lord, God, YHWH, EL SHADDI, GIGA, Jesus

Searching
Song: (searching for one)
A young man sits on the floor, disconnected.  He tries to reach out, but seems to miss.  He tries again, but is pushed away chaotically.  He does not know what is wrong.  Why can’t he fit in?  Is there something is missing?  And if so what is it?  He gets onto his knees and begins to stand up only to get his head pushed down.  He draws his arms forward trying to reach hold yet his head is brought down lower.  THEN STICOTOLY His head jerks up and freezes cocked back.  His is pushed over and falls on to his back.   Stillness.  Stillness.  Flowingly, the arms rise.  They from the shape of wings and lyrically flap majestically.   They flow in unison lyrical and flowingly, creating intricate designs and patterns.  They are brought in together to form a ball.  It rises up and hovers down.  And it calmly descends onto the man’s chest.  HE JOLTS AND JUMPS TO his knees.  He raises his arms to the sky praising.
I want to paint a story with my dance while incorporating all we learned from the beginning of the semester till now.  Yet, I do not want to emphasize on acting.    I am trying to find myself with this improvisational routine.  The Dance Showcase inspired me.  I am focusing on floor work during this routine to utilize the roll that I love to do.  Utilizing the floor as an environmental adds an interesting level of struggle and frustration to the storytelling aspect I am framing.

We rush inside, into the dark, to find our seats, as lights begin to fade in.  Music blasts open from the quiet man in the corner of stage-right.  Lights gleam on and light the stage, like a Mortal Kombat platform.  And so the play beings, with an brief introduction of all the kins, the actors: Bruce Turk as Antipholus’, Jerry Kernion as Dromio, Abby Craden as Adriana, Annie Abrams as Luciana, Michael Stone Forrest as Egeon, and others.  This interludic introduction along with the ragtime musical score creates a window, to implore the era of 1884, way back when, when Vaudeville be the bee’s knees in entertainment’s history, setting off a comedic theme, right off the bat, at the start of the beginning.  This Vaudeville frame adds an interesting layer to the already interesting Shakespearian comedic play.

An interesting performance choice happens during the telling of the Egeon’s story.  Director Michael Michetti chooses to use a film to accompany the telling of the tragic story of Egeon.  This choice gave a very informative and funny sense for the melancholy anecdote that prolonged his death sentence.  It also helped in deciphering the archaic and poetic language of Shakespeare that may not be familiar to the audience of today.  This short film clip was shot in black and white to retain the time frame the director wanted to capture, that of the past, before color.  The film was not the only implement used to set the frame of comedy.

King Lear starts off with a division of a kingdom, but there is a catch; each princess must denounce her love and affection for King Lear in order to get a piece of the land. Lear has three daughters: Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia. Goneril was the first to speak and she did a fine job, smooth talking her way to King Lear’s ear. Regan was next to speak and she too had a silver tongue that licked Lear’s ear. When it was Cordelia’s turn to speak she chose to let her actions articulate for itself:

… I am sure my love’s

More ponderous than my tongue.
