Storyboard
One area of preproduction that is overlooked upon is the storyboard. Combined with the script, storyboards are in the formulas of most great motion pictures. The art has evolved throughout the years, from simple drawn animations into more vivid visualizations of graphics; storyboards will always have their places in storytelling.
The storyboards purpose is to act as a visual script. Just as the script helps with each and every individual line of the scenes, each panel of the storyboard helps paint the description of each scene. All departments are brought in to discuses about their ideas, potential problems, and solid solutions to smoothen out the production. From camera angles, to location, costumes and props, the storyboard artist must research about every detail of each scene. These panels of pictures (which sometimes take up entire walls) bring all cast and crew on to the same page.
The storyboard developed from animation during the nineteenth and twentieth century. George Melies was the pioneer or animated cartoons with his works of Cinderella (1899), Joan of Arc (1902) and Trip to the Moon (1902). Another honorable mention is Felix Messer, the creator of Felix the Cat (1914). It wasn’t until 1933 that storyboards became the new innovation to storytelling. Walt Disney wanted a vast variety of angles to intrigue the story and to help with the planning of each angle as well as the storyline, storyboarding was developed.
In today’s age more and more storyboards are computer generated with software programs such as Storyboard Pro. I have not done my research yet on these new graphic arts, but with due time I will learn how to uses these tools in my preproduction stage of my film. This assignment has helped me understand a little more of the industry and an important side to preproduction.
