Sliding Toward Extinction
Interesting Ideas:
1) The Fiona and Flora biodiversity of California
2) What needs to be done to restore nature and protect it for further damage
This article spoke of many things that I do no know about California. It informed me of the number of species of animals and plants known to date within the state boundaries of California. And what was most important was that some of these animals and/or plant species only dwell here in California, “There are 748 species of vertebrate animals in California. Of these, 38 percent of the freshwater fish, 29 percent of the amphibians and 9 percent of the mammals are endemic – they are found nowhere else in the world…Almost 5,200 species of native plants grown within the boundaries of California and nearly one-third of these do not occur outside the state” (S.T.E. Page 3). This made me understand more about where environmentalist and ecologist are coming from when they speak of the holocaust of nature.
“ANY HIGHER ANIMAL THAT HAS COMPETED, OR HAS BEEN CONSDERED TO BE IN COMPETITION WITH MAN FOR SPACE, FOOD, OR OTHER RESOURCES, OR HAS GOOTTON IN MAN’S WAY, HAS BEEN RELENTLESSLY PURSURED, ELEMINATED, AND EVEN PUT TO EXTINCTION.” (PAGE 106 #18)
At the end of this article list many of the actions that need to be taken to solve the loss California’s biodiversity. I believe that these procedures and actions can work in helping California retain its diverse natural habitat. The main hump to get past is ownership of land. I think that is where all most all conflict arises from, LAND OWNERSHIP. People what to live in the best area and want the best resources/supplies/pleasures/materials/gifts/toys/food/love. And we will fight for our rights to obtain these things for ourselves. But that isn’t right. We need to be satisfied with what we are given and what we have. And that is a lesson I am beginning to learn everyday. And if a head-headed weirdo like me can learn then so can you.
