Last Night
“Shot through the heart and you’re to blame, you give love a bad name.”- Bon Jovi. These are the famous lyrics that sum up Allen’s first relationship. Why is love so elusive both in reality and in the mind? It is like the sun and moon; both can not be in the sky at the same time.
It all started on a simple day of grocery shopping at Starters Brother. Allen was accompanying his mom at register seven when a red hot blonde caught his eye. Delta was a twenty year old working full time as a box girl at Starters Brother. As she finished bagging all the chow that they had purchased, Delta looked up with her silky blue eyes and locked into the brown eyes of Allen. Time and space froze for a brief second. Allen left the grocery store that night not even sharing a word with his bag-girl crush, not knowing that he wouldn’t see her again until months later.
Through coincidence, luck, and God, this particular girl happened to be related to Allen’s co-worker from IKEA. As time went by Allen became more aquatint with his friends and got to see Delta more often. Finally, Allen mustered enough courage to ask Delta out to the company Christmas party but sadly was shot down. Just when Allen gave up all hope, God seemed to have other plans in mind. You see, Allen never had much experience with the opposite sex. In high school he never really dated or had a girlfriend. In fact, he was still a virgin.
January 8th was the day when they finally hung out again. That night they had a nice good session with Mary Jane at Delta’s home and ended up watching Chech and Chong together. During the hilarious Oscar-winning movie Delta’s hand lingered closer for a human touch. She too didn’t have much experience with boys and was just as curious as Allen was. As the credits rolled on to the television screen, Allen looked at the hand that was next to his. His heart pulsed rapidly as if it were to escape his chest; no girl has ever come on to him before, he knew that she was something else. Instantly, the chemistry bonded them together and the moment seemed to last for eternity, filled with novice kissing.
Each month together seemed like a blur, as if time was the rabbit and the couple was the tortoise, until March 23rd. It was seven o’clock Tuesday night as they stepped into the black 2000 Civic. Delta was on her rag and was on the brink to let loose everything she held deep inside. The F she received on her math test was just enough to boil her waters. Tears leaked and trickled down her cheeks as family and school came into discussion. Allen thought he knew where this was heading. He thought he had to be the man of the situation and end it all that night; and so, he did. Bitter droplets poured from the blue oceans and feelings of pain pierced Delta’s heart when Allen pulled the trigger that night.
